BUDDY – The Buddy Holly Musical is playing at the Colosseum Theater in Essen for the 2009/2010 season. This globally successful musical about the life of a rock’n’roll legend opened on the 8th October and has since got the audiences off their feet with excitement. Buddy Holly’s hits such as “Peggy Sue”, “That’ll Be The Day”, “Oh Boy” and “Not Fade Away” as well as Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” and Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace are just some of the highlights of this musical. The legend lives on and so does rock’n’roll.
A giant jukebox sets the stage for the short and enthralling life story of this young musician from Lubbock, Texas. Buddy’s career starts on a 10 meter diameter disc. The audience sees how a rebellious guy with glasses turns into a rock’n’roll star and feel for him when he and his band “The Crickets” record their first no. 1 hit “That’ll Be The Day” at Norman Petty’s studio. From then on the audience watches his cometlike rise to fame and witnesses how the Colosseum Theater turns in the New York’s Apollo Theatre where Buddy Holly and “The Crickets” were to be the first white band that succeeded to get an all black audience totally excited. The musical also lets the audience share him finding the love of his life in his wife Maria Elena as well as him splitting from “The Crickets” in 1958. BUDDY – The Buddy Holly Musical has mesmerised more than 20 million people worldwide since 1989.
Within just three minutes the giant jukebox turns into “Surf Ballroom” for the finale where Buddy Holly did his last show before he died. It was also the place where the story reached a musical and yet dramatic peak, one with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper performing and one with the breaking news of all three musicians dying in an accident.
